About us:

Te Wānanga o Aotearoa is working with the Department of Corrections to provide literacy and numeracy support services throughout NZ correctional facilities.  Delivery of these services aims to support inmate learners to gain appropriate literacy, numeracy, life and vocational skills to enable them to pathway into further education.  

About the role:

We invite applications from a passionate, professional and energetic individual for the Tutor / Kaiako position who will report to the Team Lead.  The primary function of the Kaiako is to deliver Literacy & Numeracy Support Services (LNSS) within the Prison environment. 

Key responsibilities for the role include:

  • Developing Individual Learning Plans and facilitating learning sessions to increase tauira knowledge, skills and competence
  • Developing teaching materials such as handouts and study materials as required to support learning
  • Maintaining records of tauira assessment results, attendance registers, progress and feedback
  • Delivering assessment with the LNAAT and interpreting results
  • Ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements including those of the Department of Corrections

About you:

  • You will have 2+ years’ experience in successfully delivering Literacy and Numeracy training to at risk or second chance learners preferably in the tertiary education sector or prison environment
  • You are proficient at establishing and maintaining strong relationships with Department of Corrections’ kaimahi and other tertiary providers delivering educational programmes in prisons
  • You will have up to date knowledge and current experience with adult teaching with a formal adult learning and training qualification(s) with:
    • The National Certificate in Adult Literacy and Numeracy Education (Vocational) (level 5)
    • Unit standards 4098, 11281 & 18203
    • A full NZ Driver’s License (Class 1) is essential
    • A basic level of physical fitness
  • You will have the ability to pass a stringent Police check to enable access to corrections facilities

As the successful candidate you will be required to complete the Department of Corrections on site induction in addition to the Te Wānanga o Aotearoa induction process.
