Te Wānanga o Aotearoa (TWoA), a unique and transformative tertiary education provider, is seeking a skilled and motivated Engineer – Data to join our Taupārongo / Technology Foundations team. This is your opportunity to contribute to a meaningful kaupapa, using your technical talents to help uplift Māori achievement and support indigenous data sovereignty.

About the Role

As an Engineer – Data, you will play a pivotal role in designing, building, and maintaining TWoA’s centralised data infrastructure. You will create and optimise data pipelines, manage data storage systems, and ensure that data is accessible, secure, and reliable for analysis, reporting, and business intelligence.

You will also support the evolution of our data architecture and work closely with analysts, developers, and stakeholders across the Wānanga to deliver future-focused, fit-for-purpose data solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and optimise data pipelines and ETL processes using Microsoft and cloud technologies.
  • Design and maintain data models that reflect business needs and enhance reporting.
  • Manage and secure data repositories (data lakes, databases) for analytics use.
  • Convert complex data into usable formats for internal users and decision-makers.
  • Collaborate with analysts, developers, and IT teams to deliver solutions that support the wider Wānanga.
  • Contribute to the evolution of TWoA’s data architecture, supporting future innovation.
  • Uphold the values of Te Kaupapa Matua and engage in the cultural life of our Wānanga.

What You’ll Bring

  • A Bachelor’s degree in IT or a related field.
  • Database and Cloud Technology certifications.
  • 5+ years’ experience in data engineering, data architecture, or analytics.
  • Expertise in Microsoft Cloud Infrastructure and Microsoft Fabric Analytics stack.
  • Proven skills in building and optimising ETL pipelines and managing large data systems.
  • Strong understanding of core data architecture principles.
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
  • A willingness to engage with te ao Māori and actively support tikanga, te reo, and the values of TWoA.
