Mō tēnei mahi | About this job

Location: Rotorua
Hours: Full-time, 37.5 hours per week

Tenure: Permanent

As a Kaiako, you will:

  • Deliver advanced te reo Māori programmes (Level 6) that deepen linguistic proficiency, cultural understanding and critical thinking, grounded in tikanga Māori and mātauranga Māori.
  • Design and facilitate rich, immersive learning experiences, including noho marae, wānanga and hui, that challenge and inspire adult learners.
  • Guide tauira toward high-level language competence, supporting them through assessment, feedback, retention strategies and successful programme completion.
  • Demonstrate leadership in te reo and tikanga, modelling advanced reo structures, translation skills, metaphorical language and key mātauranga such as pūrākau, waka history and waiata/haka.
  • Ensure academic rigor and quality, including assessment, moderation, reporting and compliance with NZQA and organisational requirements.
  • Contribute actively to the kaupapa of the wānanga, supporting tauira recruitment, engaging with iwi and community, and collaborating with kaimahi to continuously uplift teaching practice and learner outcomes.

 

Mōu | About you

We are looking for someone who has the following:

  • Advanced proficiency in te reo Māori, with a Level 6 or higher qualification (or equivalent experience), including pathways such as Te Panekiretanga, Level 7 reo qualifications, or a degree in Mātauranga Māori delivered in te reo.
  • Adult tertiary teaching and assessment credentials (or commitment to attain within 12 months), with experience teaching or facilitating at higher levels of reo development.
  • Confidence working with complex language concepts such as grammar, translation, metaphor and interpretation.
  • Strong facilitation, planning and relationship‑building skills, with the ability to motivate and challenge tauira.
  • A full NZ Driver Licence and flexibility to support noho, wānanga and off‑site delivery.

 

As a kaupapa Māori organisation, your willingness to participate in cultural activities and develop an understanding of Āhuatanga Māori (values, culture and tikanga) is desirable.
