Mō tēnei mahi | About this role

We are seeking a passionate Kaiako – Te Tohu Taonga Puoro (Level 4) to deliver an engaging and culturally grounded learning experience that supports tauira success.

This role is responsible for planning, delivering and assessing learning that enables tauira to develop skills, knowledge and confidence in taonga puoro, while upholding tikanga and kaupapa Māori practices.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Planning and delivering high-quality, tikanga-aligned learning programmes and resources
  • Facilitating engaging wānanga using a range of teaching approaches (including noho marae and te taiao-based learning)
  • Supporting tauira through induction, learning journeys and interventions to achieve successful outcomes
  • Monitoring tauira progress, completing assessments, and maintaining accurate records in line with NZQA and organisational requirements
  • Creating a collaborative, inclusive, and supportive learning environment grounded in values such as whanaungatanga, ako, aro and te hiringa
  • Building and maintaining relationships with iwi, hapū, whānau and community stakeholders

 

This is a Permanenet – Full-Time role based in Christchurch with some flexibility required for noho, wānanga, or evening teaching.

 

Mōu | About you

You are an experienced and inspiring practitioner of taonga puoro who brings energy, authenticity and cultural depth to your teaching. You are committed to supporting tauira achievement and contributing to a kaupapa Māori learning environment.

You will bring:

  • Proven experience (ideally 5+ years) in practising or facilitating taonga puoro
  • Strong teaching, facilitation or mentoring skills for both individuals and groups
  • The ability to design and deliver engaging, learner-centred experiences that meet diverse tauira needs
  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to plan, assess and report effectively
  • Confidence using digital tools and systems for teaching and administration

Ideally, you will also have:

  • A qualification in mātauranga Māori related to taonga puoro (or similar)
  • NZ Certificate in Adult and Tertiary Teaching (Level 5) or willingness to complete
  • Unit Standard 4098 (or willingness to attain)
  • A full and current NZ Driver Licence
