Kaiako/Teacher - Puna Reo
Mō mātou | About us
As a proudly indigenous tertiary educator, ‘tauira success’ is our mission and ‘whānau transformation through education’ is our vision, guiding our commitment to delivering quality education programmes underpinned by Māori culture and values.
Mō tēnei mahi | About this job
Are you passionate about supporting tamariki to learn, grow, and thrive in a nurturing environment? We’re looking for a dedicated Reliever Kaiako to join our whānau at Apakura Te Kākano Puna Reo where learning is grounded whakapapa, whanaungatanga and aroha. This is a casual position based in Te Awamutu.
At our Puna Reo, we are more than just an early learning centre – we’re a community. A place where tamariki are encouraged to explore, develop, and feel proud of who they are. As one of our valued Kaiako, you’ll help create a safe, inclusive, and culturally rich space where every child feels seen, heard, and supported.
You’ll lead and support learning aligned with Te Whāriki, weaving in marau Māori and meaningful experiences that reflect our Kaupapa. You will document tamariki progress, build strong relationships with whānau, and work alongside a passionate team to create positive outcomes for our learners.
As a reliever, you’ll step in to support our team when one of our Kaiako is away due to illness or other unforeseen circumstances. This could mean receiving a call either the evening before or early in the morning to cover a full day or part of the day. You’ll also have a chance to let us know your availability for covering planned leave – whether it’s a few hours, a few days, or something in between – we’ll work with you to make arrangements that suit both you and our centre.
Mōu | About you
This role would suit someone who has a genuine love for working with tamariki, is confident in te reo Māori, thrives in a supportive kaupapa-driven environment where whānau values and cultural connection are at the heart of everything we do.
- Current First Aid Certificate (NZQA Reported)
- Full New Zealand Class 1 Drivers’ License
- Demonstrated experience working with and caring for tamariki
- At least 3 years’ teaching experience in a full immersion or te reo Māori environment
- Confident and fluent in both spoken and written te reo Māori
- A strong understanding of Māori culture, values, and tikanga
- Comfortable with some physical activity, including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods
As a kaupapa Māori organisation, your willingness to participate in cultural activities and develop an understanding of Āhuatanga Māori (values, culture and tikanga) will be key.
