Te Wānanga o Aotearoa has been providing transformational education opportunities for 35 years to students and communities across New Zealand.  We are one of New Zealand’s largest tertiary providers, dedicated to whānau transformation through education.

We are utilising our expertise to work with the Department of Corrections to provide Level 2 Tikanga courses in selected NZ correctional facilities.  We now invite applications from passionate, professional and energetic individuals for the Tutor/Kaiako position.

About the role:

The primary function of the Kaiako Tikanga (Level 2) is to provide specialist subject knowledge in order to deliver services that support learners within the prison environment to gain appropriate skills in Tikanga. 

Key responsibilities for the role include:

  • Developing Individual Learning Plans lesson plans
  • Delivering curriculum and following marau to enhance ako and the experience of tauira learning
  • Facilitating learning sessions to increase tauira knowledge, skills and competence using relevant methods to motivate learning
  • Developing teaching materials such as handouts and study materials as required to support learning
  • Maintaining records of tauira assessment results, attendance registers, progress and feedback
  • Undertaking regular formative assessments to ensure unit standard completion
  • Ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements including those of the Department of Corrections

What you need:

Reporting to the Team Lead, your proficiency at establishing and maintaining strong relationships with Department of Corrections’ kaimahi, other tertiary providers delivering educational programmes in prisons, and relevant external groups within the region/s will be invaluable. 

In addition, you will require:

  • Diploma in Mātauranga Māori (Level 5) or in a related subject
  • Diploma in Adult Tertiary Teaching (Level 5) or equivalent
  • Either attest equivalence for NZQA standards required to assess and moderate this programme OR hold the NZ Certificate in Assessment Practice (L4)
  • Full and current NZ Driver’s Licence (Class 1)
  • The ability to pass a stringent Police check to enable access to corrections facilities

You will ideally have 3+ years’ experience working with iwi, hapu or marae projects.  In addition, teaching adults, particularly at risk or second chance learners in the tertiary education sector or prison environment is advantageous as is up to date knowledge and current experience with adult teaching.
